New pipe

Once again we are working towards a new pipe, but this time it is not new 155Mb/s ATM links but gigabit ethernet link to BT as part of the new 21CN BT network.

Why a new pipe?

We have to expand our links to BT as we increase customers, and until now the only option was 155Mb/s ATM links. The new gigabit links make a massive difference. We can see that the load is increasing on our existing links and had planned a new link some time around June 2008.

When?

We did think we had plenty of time, but we are finding the way the existing links work mean that we have seen the occasional red flecks on our monitoring on some links. The 155Mb/s pipes are in two 77.5M/s parts, and some times if load is not even some are showing some issues. We believe the monitoring is very sensitive, and even with the red flecks on our monitoring this is not generally having any noticable issues on usage. However, it is a lot sooner than we expected and may indicate the BT routers are not quite up to the job (as some BT documentation does hint).

So, the plan is to get the gigabit links as soon as possible. These are launched end of April. This means getting a new 155M/b instead is not helpful as that would take over 3 months to get in (and cost a fortune to be immediately obsolete).

BT are keen for us to be on the trial which will mean we have access to the new gigabit links sooner. However it will not be until some time between April and June that we can switch all new customers over. Before then we will be offering people upgrades to new 21CN ADSL2+ up to 24Mb/s broadband links which will relieve load on the current pipes.

So is this a problem

We think we could increase load by as much as 50%, and our service still work - however this would have high latency and some packet loss as normal. We have seen this on some more consumer ISPs in the past, and do not want this!

We are concerned enough over load that we have increased install prices twice now to discourage new customers. We plan to reduce these, and ongoing costs, once we have the new capacity. We would rather reduce customers than compromise quality of service even if this means less profit for a few months. Having said that there will be exceptions - customers moving house, and people with very low daytime usage - in such cases please discuss with sales who do have some authority to reduce install prices in some cases.

New hardware?

We also have new hardware planned - a much faster FB6000 core L2TP router pair (master and slave) to be installed on the new gigabit links as soon as it is ready, and new routers to handle much more than we will need for some years to come.
